Carrington’s World is Nominated for an Ignatz Award!

Well, bust my buttons! My mini comic Carrington’s World is nominated for a dang Ignatz Award for best Mini Comic! I guess this means I’m going to have to reprint it and actually go to SPX in September! I’m taking a break from social media right now for mental health reasons, so I was late to find out. Actually, it was so nice to hear about it from a friend than a tweet!

It’s my first Ignatz nomination and even though my experience as a juror back in 2016 taught me that being nominated, while an honor, is also a miracle (considering the sheer volume of submissions and the anonymous system of ranking and voting among the jury members), I always hoped I would get a nomination. I am so pleased that something made it through the meat grinder of that process. Thank you to the Ignatz jurors!! I hope you still like comics after that giant job!! If not, Comics still likes you and will wait for your recovery and return!

This mini was something I threw together last spring when I thought I was going to go to MoCCA, but didn’t. I’ve always wanted to make a mini about the artist Dora Carrington and now I have and now I get to be nominated for something that is like an Oscar to me! Well, there you go!

If you’re going to be at SPX on Saturday, September 17th, you can vote for me while you are there or any of the other amazing cartoonists nominated (seriously, what a list!!!!!). CORRECTION: I just found out that they will not be doing on-site voting this year, so if you want to vote you can! All you have to do is request a ballot here! If you’ve read the comic please consider voting for me! Thank you!

See you at SPX ?

IMG_4613I’m going to be at SPX this weekend.  Not tabling, but “floating” as they call it–handing out these babies that I just threw together for the occasion.  There’s a 5 page comic in it that nobody has seen yet!  I am excited to go be with my people.  Hope to SEE YOU!

Getting Ready For Drink & Draw Like a Lady

Getting ready for Drink & Draw Like a Lady

How do you like these babies? I threw together 5 minis of some of my diary comics to trade at this year’s Drink & Draw Like a Lady event.  For those of you who don’t know, it’s an annual women only comic event that kicks off MoCCA Fest weekend.  There you can mingle and trade comics (and drink and draw) with other lady comic makers, professionals, & enthusiasts.  I heard about this event about a week after it happened last year and was practically stomping up and down with frustration that I missed it.   I swore to myself that I would go, warned Graham a year in advance–and guess what?  The old fly in the stay-at-home-parent ointment appeared.  Graham’s department conference is happening this weekend and he will be gone Thursday through the weekend, so I was on the hook for Gus care.  I was more than a little (cough) upset, but you know, when you want something bad enough, you make it happen.  Gus and I will be taking the train into the city and sleeping over at my friend Jeff’s house.  I am going to put Gus to bed and Jeff has agreed to graciously hang out, while I hightail it to drink and draw with some other cartoonists.  I don’t know anyone and I doubt anyone knows me, and usually to help my social anxiety I bring some kind of wing man/woman to such an event, but SCREW IT.  This is what I know from both parenting and middle age: 1) you work with what you have 2) you keep your expectations low and 3) ON WITH THE SHOW.

I’ll be bringing some of my Forgive Me zines too and I hope that I will come home with an even trade of other lady mini comics and zines.  Very excited (and a bit nervous).  Maybe on my name tag I’ll write: JUST ASK so that can get the conversational ball rolling.  Wish me luck and if you are going, please let me know!
