I Just Got Back

January 3, 2018

January 2 2018Happy New Year!

Hey, guess what? I finished my book! I started what I thought would be a 25 page story in April and finished with a 101 page book in December! It has been a wild journey. Every single time I thought I had around 10 pages left to do, the darned thing kept ballooning. About 3 weeks before I finished I realized, “Holy crap! I am writing a graphic novel!” I really had no idea. I finished it two days before Christmas and sent it off to the publishers–with the cover done and everything–in a state of absolute shock. It was the hardest, most rewarding thing I’ve ever made–and I feel utterly changed in ways I had not anticipated. I don’t know how this will all shake out, but I am definitely in a new phase of life and work. It’s good, but uncertain.

The book will come out in the fall from Retrofit & Big Planet comics. It’s a memoir and it’s about music. That’s all I’ll say about it for now.

In the meantime, I am trying to find out what it’s like to work in the short form again. So here’s my first toe back in the water of diary comics. Hope you all have had a great new year wherever you are. In a world that continues in its uncertain way, it feels good to have something like the beginning of the year to clear the debris away. Anything can happen–so let’s all look up and begin again.

Good to have you back. Well done on finishing the book – all the best with its publication.

PS Re: sharing your posts on Twitter – Forgive me if you already know this and it’s a deliberate choice –
When I as a reader of your blog click to share your post, the text accompanying the tweet only shows the @wordpress Twitter handle and yours doesn’t appear. So you won’t necessarily be aware when someone tweets your post. I alter it manually before I tweet on your behalf. However, you can change the WordPress settings so it’s your Twitter name that appears as the default when anyone tweets the link.

Yay, you did it! I can’t begin to imagine how hard it was to juggle your family life and a project of that size at the same time. Here’s to a very long, well-earned coffee break!

Please let us know as soon as it’s possible to purchase your book — I’m already eager to do so. Also, I would love to hear more of your description of the creative process you undergo when producing larger works. (I loved your time capsule description in this post’s comic.) I find your work very inspirational.
