I have heard artists be contemptuous of other artists who have a day job. I can’t think of any other profession in which professionals criticize each other for making enough money to provide security for their families in perilous financial times. The incredible go-go-go “make it in America myth”– now abroad on internet art marketing sites– is pernicious for artists. Constant anxiety about paying the rent and buying groceries doesn’t help anyone grow their art practice. I think artists, writers and musician need to knock off this kind of judgement or contempt directed at our peers.
