What am I nuts?? Another freaking TO DO list? That’s why I named it things I WANT TO DO. We’ll see how it goes. I came up with this idea a couple days ago when I was writing in my journal. The life list is great and all, but sometimes the LIFE LONG thing sort of defuses the urgency. I thought, what are some things I’d like to do in RIGHT NOW or in the next 11 months–from practical to fanciful? Some of them are already in the works:
I’ve already done 15 drawings for #1; I have an appointment scheduled for #62. I have the stuff together for#49.
Some of them are related to each other like #25 & #59 and numbers 47, 50-52, & 87 all relate to # 1.
Someone asked me recently in an interview I did for Great Gals why I liked lists so much. I said it was because lists immediately organize ideas and give you clear beginning and end points. Also, they inadvertantly tell great stories. I like the story this list has the POTENTIAL to tell. However, lists can’t control outcomes or the future, so we’ll see what ACTUALLY happens–still, it’s nice to know what needs to be done and what I’d like to get done and what I’d like to experience NOW and not later.
Anybody want to share what they are up to this year?

I love the idea of the photobooth. I still have my photobooth pictures of me and my best friend from childhood and I love them so much.
I don’t usually make lists, but maybe I should. I want to:
* read a book a month
* go to yoga
* go to dance class
* send mail to my niece and nephew
* start a craft night (or a game night)
* find 10 new vegetarian recipes
* clean off my f-ckin desk!
* make a Blurb book of photos
* reach out to an old friend
* stay at a hotel with a waterslide
* go hear music outdoors
* take my daughter rollerskating at a rollerink
* have a fancy cocktail downtown
* go to the danish deli
* eat dim sum at a giant dim sum hall
* go to the korean supermarket with SW
* do a scavenger hunt
* get a bike!
* teach my daughter to ride a bike
I think that your list is a marvelous idea. I have a three-page to-do list, but it mostly has to do with what you call “getting current” (I call it “taking care of old karma”). But once I’m current, what next? And really, I don’t have to wait until I’m current to take care of the things I really want to do, right?
Simone- I am SO DIGGING your list! Inspiring!
Rachael- Part of getting current IS doing the things you really want to do! So I say: Go girl! Go!
Hey Summer, dig your list!
What synchronicity again. A friend sent me the first chapter from a book called Write It Down To Make It Happen, which claims that writing things down is like telling the Universe “This is what I want and I am serious about it.”
Uncannily (or just naturally?) all kinds of mind-blowing things have happened to me since. I wrote down I want to “finish the movie” this year, and now I’ve been asked to help storyboarding the animated movie I wrote. Huzzah. In a way cool nifty studio.
I also got your Great Gals book last week, which has brought me so much happiness. I wake up to a kick-ass life these days
And I’m going to draw my shoe collection too! And write down where I purchased them and for how much.
What’s your shoe?
With huge smile and happiness,
Cecile (who’s off to write her own One Hundred Things I Want To Do In 2011 list now)
To return to your last posts, I keep envisioning commissioned portraits (by you!) of beloved books, like people used to do of pets (or family members, of course): my incredibly dog-eared, bedraggled, travel-stained, utterly-adored white paperback copy of Nancy Mitford’s “Love in a Cold Climate and The Pursuit of Love,” for instance.
As for an answer to your inspiring question:
–Figure out how to afford a decent, apartment-sized electric piano so my daughter and I can have some live Bach in our lives.
–Write poetry (and read it) regularly (Thanks for your inspiration on this front Rachael!)
–Meditate regularly
so. awesome. i’m inspired to start a list of my own! there are a few to-do’s on your list that i share, actually. btw, our august is in child care two days/week now and it’s the best thing–fun and world-expanding for him and it’s given me back some time and space to myself for both work, reading and just being me sans babe.
summer, i have to tell you that every time i visit your site i feel uplifted. you are gifted, mademoiselle.
This is awesome everybody– I am so glad other people are into this idea!
Cecile – my shoe is Miz Mooz. I love their shoes. I have red pair & a brown pair.
Sarah- the idea of drawing other people’s beloved copies of books–book portraits–makes me GIDDY! Holycrap, as soon as the printing service is in place, I am going to offer this!
Heather – oh man, that encourages me–I feel that we are all very ready for Gus to be socialized– and I need to get back to work. Also, THANK YOU. Takes one to know one, miss.
Hey Summer! Thanks so much for this inspiration! I am working on a list…100 is a lot of stuff to think up! But I just blogged about what I have so far. It’s such an amazing project. Thanks again!
